Where Is My Mat is the story of Bertrand & Maaike, two friends who are driven by their passion for Yoga and want to give everyone the chance to practice anywhere, anytime.
Having worked more than 12 years as a business digital expert and manager for pure players (Yahoo!, PayPal) or companies wanting to digitize their activities (Roche Pharma, PMU), I discovered how frustrating it was to find or book a yoga class in a strange city during my business travels. From this simple observation, Where Is My Mat was born. Well at least in my mind.
After quitting my job in search of new challenges, I rediscovered yoga as a way to connect with myself and then decided to do a teacher training program in India. I am now a Yoga Alliance registered yoga teacher (RYT 200). My yoga journey so far allowed me to try different yoga disciplines, like Ashtanga, Hatha, Vinyasa, Bikram, Jivamukti, Bhakti, Hot, Yin, Kundalini, Iyengar, Aerial, Acro and more, all around the world – and for this I am very grateful.
With my yoga teacher certificate in my pocket and a new found motivation for creating a platform where people can easily find a yoga class, the next step seemed obvious: to explore the technical side. Driven by a thirst for knowledge and curiosity, I took a 9-week intensive course which ranks among the top #10 coding bootcamps in the world to become a Full stack Ruby developer and deliver the beta version of this website.
With Where Is My Mat is I want to make yoga accessible to everyone.
When I was younger and thought about myself in the future, I saw myself as a savvy career woman doing something internationally. I did indeed earn my business school degree, started working at ABN AMRO (third largest bank in the Netherlands) and ended up at PayPal where I worked for 5 years in the international marketing department with large e-commerce sites in the Middle East, Europe and Africa. I enjoyed the work I was doing and the responsibilities I had, but felt I was going in the wrong direction.
When I left my corporate job to explore what else the world had to offer, I admit I was a bit lost. Not knowing what my next job or opportunity would be, I discovered yoga as a way to connect with myself. Wanting to know more about this practice I decided to do a yoga teacher training together with my friend Bertrand, which I completed. I am now a part-time online marketing freelancer, part-time Hatha yoga and meditation instructor and I’m always on the lookout for a good class or workshop. I practice multiple styles; Vinyasa',' Ashtanga, Hatha, Acro, Mysore, Jivamukti, Bikram, Kundalini and many more to keep myself up to date.
Completing my teacher training with Bertrand brought me in contact with Where Is My Mat and I was immediately hooked on the idea, not to mention that I had some experience myself of not being able to find yoga classes when traveling.
With Where Is My Mat I want to make a difference in the world. Helping people to connect to yoga, to others and ultimately to themselves.
